Green Spin began as nightmare I experienced in May 2008. When I awoke from the bad dream, the memory of the dream was so vivid, I just had to get it on tape. So, I pulled out my digital recorder and poured out what later became chapter 8.

New technology reported by Malcolm Ritter of the Associated Press (AP) empowers the computer to now reconstruct memories visually. Subjects were shown movie scenes and their brains were scanned by the computer which translated brain patterns into visual images. It’s spooky how much the computer was able to grab from the brain.

So, perhaps in the future, Stephen King and I can capture our scary dreams straight to computer without having to remember a thing. Possible?

Green Spin‘s author, John Pilmer, outlined the background and inspiration of his new novel, some of the real-life parallels, and shed fascinating insight into modern communications today on Utah Public Radio’s “Access Utah.” The program was heard online, and on 33 stations throughout Utah.

Host Tom Williams spent the entire hour with Pilmer, discussing the many facets of the futuristic tech-thriller. Later in the interview, attention shifted to real-world public relations strategies (and blunders). The PilmerPR CEO touched on his years of experience in Green PR and corporate social responsibility.

Listen to the full interview above.

Treats all around for this book club hosting a friendly discussion of John Pilmer’s new novel, Green Spin. John put on his apron to bring Green Spin Tea Cookies & Green Spin Caramels to rock the house with Halloween treats. The cookie recipe & caramels available in Book Club Corner of www.GreenSpinBook.com . Interested book clubs can also invite the author to talk about Green Spin via Skype on Book Club Corner.

Book club members gave the author a warm welcome and were generous in their appreciation of the first time novelist.

“I especially think they enjoyed hearing the origin of the book,” stated John. “A dream in May of 2008 led to the development of chapter 8 and the book grew from there. Folks seem to like hearing how a dream ends up like this and I really had a blast telling the story.”

Attendees shared their favorite parts of the book and even gave the author input on how to make his next book better. One participant asked if there was another book in the works. John shared that he is about 80 pages into his next novel.

Green Spin is available at Amazon & in iBook from iTunes

John Pilmer, author of the fiction-thriller Green Spin, received an announcement, the other day, from Scott at Eco Active America:

I am pleased to announce that we will be having the EPA’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and Award Event on December 2nd at Club Nokia. We will have celebrities, famous musicians presenting awards and playing music throughout the event. We would love to have your company be part of this event. This is an event not to be missed.

The e-mail goes on to explain why it is “not to be missed.” The event takes place at the luxurious (and Green-certified) Club Nokia, and is catered by the famous chef, Wolfgang Puck. There will be two “Green Carpet” arrival events, where “Green celebrities” will walk to show their support for the EPA. Awards will be given, drinks will be served, and a large dance will wrap up the evening.

Organizers expect about 1,200 people at the closed event, made of “a very select targeted audience including and not limited to actors, politicians, high profile business owners and dignitaries.” It will be broadcast live online for those not invited.

Proceeds support RainTrust, an organization designed to preserve rain forests while helping impoverished countries.

So how socially responsible is this event, and how much is just greenwashing? Green Spin author John Pilmer answers that question in the following Social Responsibility Minute. Hear his thoughts and share yours below.

One line from that monologue goes something like: “People whine about all those dolphins caught in the tuna nets…what about all the tuna in the tuna nets?!” I love Johnny B, but I share that to make a point about this week’s news about “modified salmon.”

AquAdvantage Fish

Grown 2x faster than “natural” salmon and just as tasty – what could be bad about that. Well, opponents do have a point ala Jurassic Park gene splicing. The “modified” salmon has a human installed growth hormone on-switch from an “eel-like fish, an ocean pout.” Bottom line, “big fish fast” to your grocer meat counter – shouldn’t they call it the Protein counter now?

Maybe this is more like Godzilla. What could we get if we install that growth “on switch” in a whale? WOW! Think of the bucks for Japan’s fishing industry. Think of the Whale Wars episode. Think of the Moby Dick Revisited movie rights. Well, I get carried away. I am a PR and marketing guy, after all.

That said, I think I would eat this fish from AquaBounty. I eat hybrid tomatoes. I eat beefy beef and lean piggies that have more supplements than I can buy at Gold’s Gym. Nobody eats corn that hasn’t been monkeyed with by man for centuries. No telling what how much plastic we are eating from the fish since we have turned out back on dumping millions of plastic bottles into the ocean.

Now, let’s see if AquaBounty passes the Triple Bottom Line of Green (Corporate Responsibility) Test:

Planet – can we be assured these Super Salmon won’t be introduced into the Atlantic or Pacific?

People – Omega 3, yes! Fish is awesome, healthier than most meat or poultry, but has there been adequate testing on effects of consumption?

Profit – AquaBounty should make a grundle if this takes off (and in a capitalist society that I love, more power to them)

Now, I do agree we should have a cool label to go on this fish. Now, let me put my marketing brainstorm hat on for a minute. Maybe something like:

“Super Salmon – able to jump a man-made fish ladder or a salmon-killing dam in a single leap. ”

small print: This nutritious and Omega 3 rich food is made available to you and your family because mankind has strip-mined the ocean of natural fish and instead of being socially responsible in fishing and rehabilitating the ocean, it’s easier to change the genetic code to feed your family. You understand fish is ssoooooo good for you. Fish – its what’s for dinner. (please discontinue use if your children start growing really, really fast)

Back to the tuna in the tuna nets. Maybe its time for mankind to examine our shortsighted practices causing us to look for amazing technology like this.

Many events claim to be “socially responsible” or “green.” They may use energy-saving lights, use recycled paper, or donate a portion of revenues to a worthy cause. But how much energy is used traveling to the event? Are the green efforts economically sustainable and sensible to stock-holders? How likely are people to attend if you make them jump through hoops?

There is a lot to consider when planning a socially responsible event. Green Spin author and corporate social responsibility expert John Pilmer of PilmerPR breaks them down into the “three-legged stool” or “triple bottom-line” of sustainability: Planet, People and Profits. Here is counsel below in the first installment of the Social Responsibility Minute:

SALT LAKE CITY—September 9, 2010—Green Spin author John Pilmer will speak today at the UVEF Crunch Lunch event on the subject of “Corporate Responsibility – From the Ground Up,” starting at noon at the Provo Novell campus. The event is open to the public.

“80% of the world’s large companies now produce Corporate Responsibility (CR) reports*,” said John Pilmer. “There is an effect happening now as partners and vendors to these companies are called to account for their track record of citizenship.”

65% of European companies have a full-time CR officer (also known as Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR])**. The U.S. lags behind at 35%, but that is changing according to Pilmer.

“Corporate social responsibility is not new to international companies, but some U.S. companies are just catching on,” Pilmer said. “The big challenge is that developing a track record of improving citizenship takes time. U.S. companies need to get started now, or be left behind in competitive situations.”

Walmart exemplifies a huge company demanding compliance from suppliers in areas of sustainability. Other large companies now make similar demands of business partners. Although CSR plans and reports are a voluntary corporate choice, BusinessWeek reports that two-thirds of consumers would now rather purchase from a company addressing Corporate Responsibility.

ISO 26000 out this year names seven core subjects for reporting. Pilmer will share these and discuss the triple-bottom-line of CR: Planet, People, and Profits. His remarks will be posted on the company blog at http://www.pilmerpr.com/blog .

John Pilmer is also founder and president of PilmerPR. PR News has praised PilmerPR’s work in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility. Additional resources on CR may be found at http://www.pilmerpr.com/csr_pr.html .

PilmerPR tips for emerging companies seeking to dominate their sector may be found on the company’s blog: http://www.pilmerpr.com/blog; YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/johnpilmer; and at Twitter: @jpilmer. John Pilmer’s new novel, Green Spin, a near future fictional account of the dangers of the 24-second news cycle and environmental extremism, is available on Amazon.

About the Novel – Green Spin

In 2016, the delivery of news has evolved. News cycles are measured in seconds. People, even powerful politicians and CEO’s, are chewed up in the media machine. In the riveting new novel, Green Spin, PR intern Jack Knighton and presidential hopeful Gerald Hunte find themselves the unwitting characters in a drama that is Green Spin. Lives hang in the balance in this life-or-death struggle, controlled by a mental whiz gone postal. Julie, the girl of Jack’s hopes and dreams, struggles along with Jack’s family to cope through the hellish ordeal as SWAT works feverishly to save lives – even if some must die.

Orem, Utah – September 3, 2010 – John Pilmer’s new tech thriller, Green Spin, is now available for purchase through iTunes’ iBooks app. This will make the book available for reading on Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

“This marks the first digital publication of Green Spin,” said author John Pilmer. “Given the role future communication devices play in the novel, it seems appropriate to publish in this format. This is the beginning of the digital media revolution foreseen in the book.”

Readers may choose the iBooks format for its convenience and lower price. The digital copy of Green Spin costs $9.99, two dollars less than the paperback currently available on Amazon.com where it enjoys a 4-star rating, and does not involve shipping costs.

About the Novel – Green Spin

In 2016, the delivery of news has evolved. News cycles are measured in seconds. People, even powerful politicians and CEO’s, are chewed up in the media machine.

Dear Senator McCain,

My name is John Pilmer. My father, Edwin H. Pilmer, Jr. was a pilot with you in the U.S. Navy. He flew with you in VT-9 at NAS Meridian, Mississippi before your deployment to Vietnam. You knew my parents well enough that my mom remembers you coming over to my house a time or two when I was little. My parents were distraught when you were captured in Vietnam. As kids, I remember my siblings and I wore POW bracelets with your name on them hoping you would come home safely.

I wanted to thank you for the sacrifices you made so that my family and I could have a better world to live in. You have been a real inspiration to us with your wiliness to serve our country. You gave up years of your life as a POW. It’s because of men like you we are able to enjoy the many freedoms of this great country.

I have written a novel with a main character who is a Congressman and war veteran. His persona was inspired by you. May I send you a copy?

I know you are a busy man, but I would love to deliver the book in person to properly thank you for your service and to talk about my Dad who is no longer with us. It would be a great privilege to meet you.

Sincerely,

John Pilmer
